Yellowquill University College is a First Nation owned and operated post-secondary institute. It was founded and is governed by the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council – Council of Chiefs and has been in existence since 1984 – 36 years!
Yellowquill University College post-secondary programs are not funded by either the Provincial or Federal governments and we survive on tuition payments as our only income. We have a Mature Student High School Diploma program at the College which is funded by the Provincial government at a moderate rate.
Due to COVID-19 we are experiencing financial issues this year. We had to shut down the in person instruction in March and did distance education for the duration of the year. We have a fantastic bunch of Instructors who did everything they could to ensure that students got all their learning supplies either by hand delivery or by distance education and were able to graduate from their programs. The majority of our students are funded through their First Nation Education Authorities, Education and Training Departments or Income Assistance Services to attend school. Their funding is minimal and most did not have the required technology to do distance education on line – lap tops, internet connections. The University College also had to upgrade server to meet new requirements. Additional funds were spent in this area due to necessity. We were fortunate to receive a grant from the Winnipeg Foundation which enabled us to purchase a portion of the necessary supplies for the new school year.
The requirement to have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available to all students and staff has also created additional expenses.
For the 2020-21 school year, we have lost revenue due to enrollment being down about 15% and the inability to offer the Workshops we would normally do due to the fear of COVID-19. This has put a financial strain on the Yellowquill College budgets for this year.
Yellowquill University College would appreciate donations!
