Bachelor of
First Nations Studies

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of First Nations Studies (BFNS) program will be offered on campus at Yellowquill University, with classes commencing on January 6th, 2025.

Currently, we are delivering part of the BFNS courses in the following First Nations for the Baccalaureate of Knowledges program:

- Red Sucker Lake First Nation

- Wasagamack First Nation

- St. Theresa Point First Nation

- Cross Lake First Nation

We have successfully delivered, and continue to offer, all BFNS courses within our on-campus First Nations Bachelor of Education program.

We are excited to announce the launch of our program in January 2025, a vital step toward building stronger learning communities through the powerful concept of “Wahbung,” which bridges our past with a promising future.

The Bachelor of First Nations Studies program is designed to deliver a robust foundation of First Nations studies courses that meet the certification requirements for licensed teachers and facilitate entry into a First Nations-centric social work program. The first 30 courses will encompass a total of 90 credit hours, covering three years of study, with students majoring in Native Studies and minoring in English Literature.

Upon completing the 90 credit hours (two years) of the Bachelor of First Nations Studies program, students will seamlessly transition into one of the following advanced pathways:

1. The First Nations Bachelor of Education program

2. The First Nations Bachelor of Relational Studies program

Students who complete the 90 credit hours (three years) in the First Nations Bachelor of Education program will satisfy all provincial requirements, including mandated practicum experiences for permanent teacher certification. Likewise, those who finish 60 credit hours (two years) in the First Nations Bachelor of Relational Studies program will obtain credentials equivalent to a social work degree.

Our Bachelor of First Nations Studies program is dedicated to empowering students with the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in impactful careers in teaching and social work.
